Raising Awareness in the Chesapeake Bay for our Bronze Award

Girl Scout Troop 81178 from Thurmont, MD, has made a significant impact in our community by earning the prestigious Bronze Award through their dedicated project focused on the Chesapeake Bay. This initiative began with the troop’s exploration of the bay and the pressing issues surrounding its pollution. As they dove into research, the girls uncovered fascinating facts about the bay’s importance and its challenges. Filled with newfound knowledge and enthusiasm, they decided to take action.
We’ve included some patch suggestions to reward those who participate in the event.

Discovering the Chesapeake Bay
Here are some amazing facts they learned during their research:
- The Chesapeake Bay holds an astonishing 18 trillion gallons of water, enough to fill over 50 billion bathtubs!
- A six-foot tall person could wade through more than 700,000 acres of the bay without ever submerging.
- The bay’s deepest point, known as “The Hole,” reaches depths exceeding 170 feet.
- In 2017, Mr. Trash Wheel managed to recover 699,000 cigarette butts, 123,040 chip bags, 1,130 glass bottles, and staggering amounts of plastic waste, highlighting the urgent need for action.
Armed with these insights, the girls recognized that educating the community about proper waste disposal is essential for protecting our precious bay.

Planning the Project
With a clear focus on their goal, the girls set out to create eye-catching designs for trashcans intended for local parks. They approached the Town of Walkersville, sharing their knowledge about the bay and emphasizing the necessity of preserving its resources. Their engaging presentation successfully garnered permission to implement their project.
After receiving approval, the girls mobilized quickly, collecting the necessary trashcans, paint, and supplies, while also organizing a cleanup day at the parks. After transforming the trashcans into vibrant, artistic pieces, they gathered at two parks to clean up litter. Together, they collected two full bags of trash, preventing it from making its way to the bay.

Lessons Learned
This project offered a wealth of experiences for the girls. They discovered that every small effort contributes to a greater cause, and regardless of age or size, everyone can make a difference. The importance of disposing of trash properly became crystal clear, as did its unseen impacts. Additionally, the girls honed their public speaking skills while delivering their presentation to town officials, fostering teamwork and sisterhood as they collaborated on this meaningful effort.
A Commitment to Service
Troop 81178 comprises 25 girls aged five to twelve, supported by five dedicated leaders. Our troop prides itself on being active and committed to community service. Each summer, our Daisy Girl Scouts select a service project, initiating with a successful school supply drive that filled 44 bags with essential items for local students. Since then, the girls have engaged in various activities, including tree planting, food drives for local food banks, and gathering supplies for our military.
We take great pride in embodying the Girl Scout mission, ensuring every girl applies the principles of courage, confidence, and character in navigating life’s challenges. We believe that by empowering even one girl, we can foster lasting change within our community. Our troop reflects a spirit of sisterhood, filled with camaraderie through camping, hiking, crafting, and simply enjoying one another’s company.

The Impact of Scouting
As a Girl Scout leader, I find immense joy in witnessing the growth and development of our girls. I joined this journey to help my daughter, who was once shy and reserved, blossom into a confident individual. The Girl Scout experience has provided her—and many others—with invaluable skills, leadership opportunities, and the courage to embrace new challenges.
Now in sixth grade, she thrives within the program. I’ve seen her confidently present awards to local firefighters, communicate with potential customers at cookie booths, and lead community projects. Her love for camping, hiking, crafting, and service has flourished, and her newfound self-assurance is inspiring.
I believe wholeheartedly in the Girl Scout mission and strive to ensure that every girl has the opportunity to experience the same growth and joy that my daughter has. Through friendship, adventure, and shared experiences, we aim to reveal the endless possibilities that await them in the world.
As we continue this journey, we remain committed to making a positive difference—one girl at a time. Together, we can build a brighter future for our community and beyond.
