November is Diabetes Awareness Month.
Diabetes is a condition where the body doesn’t produce enough insulin or can’t use it effectively. Insulin plays a part in helping your body turn food into energy. Without it, too much glucose (sugar) gets in your blood.

Older girls may want learn more about diabetes and the different types of diabetes (type 1 and type 2).
Girls of any age can learn to support friends, family and scouts that have diabetes.
- As with any situation, asking and listening to what their friends need is the most important way to help someone with diabetes
- Stay supportive and positive.
- Join them in making healthy snack and drink choices that are good for everyone instead of having candy and junk food when you are together
- Don’t blame or shame them or make fun of their condition or anything they need to help themselves monitor or treat their condition.
- Help them stay active by inviting them to play outside or doing physical activities together
- Find an adult to help if they look like, or say they, are feeling unwell
Scouts of any age can learn that while having diabetes can beyond a person’s control, there are steps they can take to help minimize their own risk of developing diabetes.
- Choosing water over sugary drinks
- Eating more fruits and vegetables
- Choosing whole grain pasta, bread and snacks
- Being physically active
