Join our Facebook page Helping Girl Scouts Affected by Hurricane Helene which was created for troops to help one another after a disaster.
The name of the Facebook page is updated each time there is a situation in an area where Girl Scout troops may need assistance from their sister troops across the country.
It’s hard to know what will be helpful and what will not. It is important not to send items immediately after a disaster that will need to be stored until the clean up is done. Think about what is an immediate need first and hold on to donations meant to replace lost items later. Immediate needs after a disaster generally include:
- Wipes, regular and antibacterial, for cleaning hands and items without water which may not be available
- Disinfectant spray
- Food items that don’t require heating or refrigeration such as granola bars and protein bars, peanut butter, jerky, dried fruits
- New packages of underwear and socks. Many people donate gently used clothing but underwear and socks can be hard to find
- Toothbrushes and toothpaste, combs and other personal care items including sanitary products for women and girls.
