Description
2″ Iron-On Embroidered Patch.
Your group may need to learn skills for hot, cold or rainy weather. Crossing water also requires additional skills. Longer hikes will require extra equipment.
Some basic skills for those going on shorter hikes on marked trails include:
- Hands should be free (other than a walking stick if using one). Water, snacks and other supplies should be in a lightweight backpack.
- Keeping pace: Your pace should be easy enough that after 5 minutes of walking you should not be breathing heavy or sweating.
- Adequate spacing: Hikers should leave space between themselves and other hikers. Walking right behind another hiker can lead to accidents.
Hiking uphill or downhill:
- Keep your body straight.
- Use the strength of your legs to climb or descend. Avoid grabbing small trees or branches that may break.
- Move sideways or in a zig zag when going up or down a steep slope.
- Maintain a steady pace. Don’t try to run uphill or downhill.
Don’t do the following while hiking. Take a break and move out of the path to:
- Drink or eat
- Read a map

How will your girls earn the hiking patch? These scouts are ready for a fun hike.
