Meeting Lesson Plan: Rosie the Rose

Here is a recap of how our troop earned their Rose petal using this lesson plan!
I’m so excited for this one! The Rose Petal (Make the World a Better Place) is really the heart of being a Girl Scout. I love explaining to the girls that they don’t have to wait until they are “grown-ups” to change the world—they can start right now with their own two hands.
Here is my plan for our “World Changers” meeting:
Goal: To identify small ways we can help our community and complete a hands-on project that leaves a place better than we found it. Materials Used: Rosie the Rose story, rose-colored paper, trash bags, gloves, and craft supplies for our “Kindness Rocks.”
0:00 – 0:10 | Arrival & Opening Circle
We’ve included some patch suggestions to give to participants. See all our fun patches.
As the girls arrived, I had a “Garden of Generosity” poster on the wall. I asked each girl to draw a tiny flower on the poster to represent a good deed they want to do.
- The Girl Scout Promise: We stood in our Daisy Circle and said the promise with our hands over our hearts.
- The Law: We shouted the rose-colored line: “I will do my best to be… make the world a better place.”
- Check-in: I asked the girls, “If you could have one superpower to help the Earth, what would it be?”
0:10 – 0:25 | Story Time: Rosie’s Bright Idea
I read the story of Rosie the Rose, who realizes that even a small flower can bring a lot of joy to a big park.
- Interactive Element: I told the girls that every time Rosie did something to help her environment, they had to pretend to “bloom” by starting in a ball and stretching their arms out wide.
- Discussion: We talked about how “the world” isn’t just far-away places—it’s our playground, our backyard, and our meeting room.
0:25 – 0:45 | Practice: Leave No Trace
To show them how to be observant, we went on a “Better Place Walk“ around our meeting area.
- The Activity: We took gloves and bags and went outside for 10 minutes. I told them we were “Earth Detectives” looking for anything that didn’t belong (like litter).
- The Lesson: We talked about how much better the grass looked once we picked up the trash. We practiced the Girl Scout rule: “Always leave a place better than you found it.”
- Service Connection: We discussed how Community Service Activities are our way of showing the world we care.
0:45 – 0:55 | Craft: Kindness Rocks
We used smooth stones and bright paints to make “Kindness Rocks.”
- The Activity: Each girl painted a bright design or a smiley face on a rock.
- The Goal: I told them their “mission” was to leave their rock somewhere in their neighborhood (like a park or a library) to make someone else’s day a little brighter.
- The Lesson: Making the world a better place can be as simple as making one person smile.
0:55 – 1:00 | Clean-up & Closing Circle
- Clean-up: We did a “Super Sweep,” making sure our meeting room was even cleaner than it was when we arrived.
- Friendship Circle: We formed our circle and joined hands.
- Friendship Squeeze: I started the squeeze, and when it returned to me, we all said together, “We change the world, one girl at a time!”
Leader Note: If you want to keep the girls inspired, these + are a great way for them to share their “World Bettering” ideas with other troops!
Do your girls prefer “outdoor” service projects like picking up litter, or do they enjoy “indoor” projects like making cards or crafts for others better?
