18 Fun Ideas for Daisies to Earn the Red Petal: Courageous and Strong

Earning the Courageous and Strong petal (the red one!) is an exciting step for any Daisy Girl Scout. It’s all about teaching girls that being brave doesn’t mean you aren’t afraid—it means you try anyway! Whether they are trying a new food, standing up for a friend, or physical challenges, these activities help girls find their inner strength.
By combining active games with thoughtful discussions, you can help your Daisies build the confidence to tackle new experiences with a “can-do” spirit.

Be brave at the doctor
It can be scary to go to the doctor but it is important to stay healthy and strong. Sometimes you might need a shot or have to take medicine. Nobody likes it. Not even grownups but they learned to be brave just like you are..

Trying something new can be scary
Let your girls celebrate their first year of troop fun with this fun patch group commemorating their first meeting, cookie sale, campfire, ceremony, overnight and trail hike.

Try a “New-to-Me” Food Tasting
Have a “Courageous Café.” Bring in a variety of fruits or snacks that the girls might not have tried before (like dragon fruit, starfruit, or even seaweed snacks). Being brave enough to try one bite is a great way to practice courage!

Practice making new friends
Role-play situations where you see someone new at school or in your troop. What could you say to them? Does it make you nervous to approach someone new? Why?

Visit with a firefighter or police officer
Ask them questions like “Have you ever been afraid? How did it make you feel?” Make them Thank You notes for being brave enough to protect the communty.

Don’t be afraid of creepy crawlies
Unless you are allergic, there is no reason to be afraid of bugs or worms. Go outside and look around under rocks or on leaves. Many bugs (like spiders) are good bugs and just part of nature. Even bees will usually not hurt you if you leave them alone. Bees are important for helping plants.

Make a crown of courage
Print our download. Choose from 5 different scenarios, such as “I’m not afraid of the dark” or “I can make new friends.” Staple the strips together and fit to your head.

Obstacle Course Challenge
Set up a simple indoor or outdoor obstacle course. Use tunnels, “balance beams” (painter’s tape on the floor), and “mountains” (cushions). Encourage the girls to cheer each other on, focusing on the strength it takes to finish the course.

Learn that Bullies are just scared
Our download shares four situations for your girls to look at and decide whether the situations involve bullying. Challenge your girls to be courageous and strong by knowing when bullying is taking place, and how to deal with it. Your scouts might enjoy role playing some scenarios when confronting a bully or witnessing bullying.

Learn a “Power Pose”
Teach the girls about “Power Posing” (like the Wonder Woman stance). Have them hold the pose before starting a new activity to help them feel more confident and strong.

Don’t be afraid of the dark
Being in the dark can be scary. But usually there is nothing to be afraid of. Use a night light or a flashlight so it’s not completely dark.
