9 Ideas for Daisies to Earn the Purple Petal: Respect Myself and Others

Daisy Girl Scouts Outside

Earning the Purple Petal is all about balance. It teaches girls that while it is important to be kind to their friends, it is just as important to be kind to themselves! Respecting yourself means taking care of your body and mind, while respecting others means appreciating what makes everyone unique.

Here are 12 hands-on activities to help your Daisies bloom with self-respect and empathy:

Healthy “Body Fuel” Snack

Talk about how respecting your body means giving it what it needs. Have the girls build “fruit kabobs” or “ants on a log.” Discuss how eating healthy foods and drinking water is a way of saying “thank you” to our bodies.

Practice “Body Boundaries”

Teach the girls about personal space using “Hula Hoop Bubbles.” Have them stand inside a hoop to see their “space.” Discuss how we respect others by asking before giving a hug or touching someone’s hair.

The “Wrinkled Heart” Lesson

Give each girl a paper heart. Every time you describe someone being disrespectful (like name-calling or excluding someone), have them crinkle the paper. Then, try to smooth it out. This shows that even if we say sorry, the “wrinkles” (hurt feelings) can stay, so it’s best to be respectful from the start.

“Yoga and Zen” Mindfulness

Teach 3-4 simple yoga poses (like Tree Pose or Butterfly) and practice deep breathing. Explain that respecting yourself means knowing when to take a “quiet break” when you feel frustrated or tired.

The “Puzzle Piece” Mural

Give each girl a large puzzle piece to decorate with things she is good at. When you put the puzzle together, it shows that while each girl is amazing on her own, the troop is even better when everyone’s unique “piece” is respected and included.

Make blessing’s bags

Respecting someone means thinking about what they actually need to feel comfortable and clean. Fill ziplock bags with personal care items to bring to shelters or hand out to the homeless. Blessing bags typically contain sample sizes of hygiene products that can help people through times of disaster.

Learn about having good self-esteem

Help your girls take the self-esteem quiz in our download. to get an idea of their confidence level. A confident girl respects herself and others. Girls with less confidence not only have a hard time respecting themselves but often put others down to make themselves feel better.  Ask them to end their troop meeting by saying something positive about each girl in the troop.
