Do I have to follow every tradition exactly as it’s written in the handbook?

Short answer: Nope! Think of the handbook as a giant, 200-page suggestion box, not a law book. While we definitely want to keep those core values intact, you have total permission to tweak the steps to match your troop’s vibe. If a ceremony feels way too stuffy for a group of wiggly 7-year-olds, just chop it down! Making it work for your kids is way more important than following a script.
How can I keep traditions fun for the “veteran” scouts?
We’ve included some patch suggestions to give to participants. See all our fun patches.
If you’ve got a mixed-level troop, the best way to keep your older girls from rolling their eyes is to hand them the keys. Let your seasoned scouts take over the planning for the next big event. When they’re the ones designing a “top secret” handshake or picking the theme for an investiture, they’re actually invested. Plus, watching them get excited while teaching the younger girls the ropes is pretty much the best part of being a leader.
What’s the deal with SWAPS? (And do we really have to make them?)
SWAPS stands for “Special Whatchamacallits Affectionately Pinned Somewhere,” and they are a huge staple in the scouting world. They’re basically tiny, 2-inch crafts—think foam shapes or bead charms—that scouts trade with each other.
Don’t worry, you don’t need to churn these out for every single meeting. But if you’re heading to a big day camp with 50+ scouts, they’re a must-have. It’s the ultimate icebreaker!
Can our troop start our own secret traditions?
Absolutely. In fact, we highly recommend it.
Creating “top secret” traditions—like a specific three-beat clap after earning a badge or a ridiculous song you only sing on hikes—is what turns a troop into a family. A 2024 survey showed that 85% of leaders found that custom traditions actually helped keep girls in the program longer.
Help! My scouts think ceremonies are boring.
If you’re seeing more yawns than smiles, it’s time to speed things up.
- Keep it snappy: Try to keep ceremonies under 12 minutes.
- Add some “Wow”: Swap out old-school candles for glow sticks or colorful props.
- Give them a job: When the kids have speaking parts, they’re 60% less likely to get restless. If they’re part of the show, they won’t tune out.
Is this going to break the bank?
Good news: Most traditions can be done for less than $3 per scout. You really don’t need a massive budget to make things feel special. Dig through your craft bin for safety pins, cardstock, and beads. A little creativity and some recycled materials go a long way in making a ceremony feel “official.”
Where can I find some free planning help?
Don’t reinvent the wheel! There are over 500 free ceremony scripts and templates floating around online. Check out your local council’s site or dive into Pinterest. These resources can easily save you three hours of planning time—which, let’s be honest, we could all use.
