Being safe in and around water is important to teach children of every age.
Even those who know how to swim need to know their limitations and may have difficulty assessing a dangerous situation.
Invite a swim instructor with current Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification to your troop meeting or arrange to get water safety lessons from a WSI instructor at a local pool.
Some very basic water safety rules for children of any age include (but not limited to):
- Never swim alone
- Always ask permission to enter the water
- Don’t reach for dropped objects
- Stay away from the water unless an adult is present
- Listen to the lifeguard, watcher (a water-rescue trained person under the direction of a life guard) or adult in charge
Many youth groups have water safety rules. Make sure to know and follow the safety rules for your group.
