Suggestions for how girls can earn the Hammock Camping Patch:
Make sure hammocks are allowed at your camp site.
Choose healthy trees. Trees with dead branches or fallen debris around the ground can cause serious harm.
Also check to make sure there aren’t any nests or signs of any animals making their home there.
Choose a spot with minimal ground cover and no poisonous plants.
Hang your hammock at least 200 feet away from any water source.
Use wide straps instead of rope to protect the tree bark.
Hang your hammock at a comfortable sitting height or about 18 inches off of the ground.
Hanging the foot of the hammock 8 – 10 inches higher than the other side can prevent sliding down to the middle of the hammock while you sleep.
You don’t want the hammock to be too straight or saggy. About a 30 degree angle would be ideal.
It is important to break down the hammock whenever you are leaving the camp site, even for a short time.
This will prevent wildlife from getting tangled in your hammock.
A hammock with built in mosquito netting will make your night more comfortable and keep you safer from stinging bugs.
A foam or underinflated sleeping pad in the hammock will keep you warmer.
A rain or shelter tarp and a drip line are optional additions in case of rain while hammock camping.
Sleeping slightly diagonally, instead of in line with the hammock, will flatten the fabric under you a bit and should make you sleep more comfortably.
