Suggestions for how Girls can earn the Electronic Detox Patch:
Program Goals:
- Understand the effects of excessive screen time on mental and physical health.
- Explore alternative activities that promote creativity, connection, and well-being.
- Develop a personal plan for reducing screen time and engaging in offline activities.
Activities:
Items 1, 6 and 7 are required. Others are optional.
1. Screen Time Awareness
Discussion: Start with a group discussion about how much time girls spend on their devices.
Activity: Have each girl create a “Screen Time Diary” for a week, noting how much time they spend on different devices.
2. Nature Connection
Outdoor Adventure: Organize a nature walk or hike. Encourage girls to observe their surroundings and take notes or draw what they see.
Reflection: After the walk, gather to share experiences and feelings about being outdoors without devices.
3. Creative Crafts
Crafting Session: Host a crafting session where girls can create something using recycled materials.
Show and Tell: Each girl presents her craft and explains how it felt to create without screens.
4. Mindfulness and Relaxation
Mindfulness Activity: Teach girls simple mindfulness techniques, such as deep breathing or guided meditation.
Journaling: Have them write about their feelings and thoughts during the mindfulness session.
5. Game Night
Board Games and Outdoor Games: Organize a game night with board games, card games, or outdoor activities like tag or capture the flag.
Team Building: Emphasize teamwork and communication without the use of electronics.
6. Digital Detox Challenge
Print the worksheet from your order confirmation. Ask your girls what they can do instead of spending time using electronics?
Check off things that interest them. Add their own ideas the 2nd column. Cut out the ones you like and paste them on craft sticks to store in a jar.
Challenge: Encourage girls to participate in a week-long digital detox challenge where they limit their screen time to a specific amount each day.
Check-Ins: Schedule daily or weekly check-ins to discuss experiences, challenges, and successes.
7. Create a Personal Plan
Goal Setting: Help each girl create a personal plan for balancing screen time with other activities. Include goals for offline hobbies, family time, and outdoor activities.
Pledge: Have them write a pledge to commit to their plan and share it with the group.
This program not only promotes healthy habits but also fosters creativity, connection, and mindfulness among Girl Scouts. Happy detoxing! 🌼📵
