Celebrate Earth Day with Action and Inspiration!

Girl Scouts celebrate Earth Day

Earth Day, celebrated every year on April 22, is a global event dedicated to demonstrating our support for protecting our planet. This year, Scout troops across the USA stepped up and made a difference in their communities. Here’s a spotlight on some incredible projects carried out by troops just like yours! We’d love to hear your Earth Day initiatives—share your ideas in the comments below!

Troop 43564 at Gig Harbor

For six consecutive years, Troop 43564 has dedicated their efforts to the Parks Appreciation Event in Gig Harbor. To date, they have planted over 800 trees at Sehmel Park, significantly enhancing local biodiversity and promoting a greener community. Tree planting is not only a way to beautify the park, but it also plays a critical role in carbon sequestration and providing habitats for wildlife.

Cadette Troop in New Boston

The Cadette troop made a unique and educational choice by attending an open house with Waste Management. They embarked on an insightful tour of the landfill, learning firsthand about waste management processes and the importance of recycling. After the tour, the scouts enjoyed crafts and a picnic lunch with Waste Management employees, receiving fun t-shirts as a token of appreciation. This hands-on experience fosters awareness about waste reduction and management.

Brownie Troop from Missouri

The second-grade Brownies in Missouri are actively participating in caring for their local environment by cleaning up trash along their favorite trail at Burr Oak Woods. Following their cleanup efforts, they will plant a rain garden featuring native plants, which play a crucial role in supporting local ecosystems and improving water quality. Engaging in such projects helps young scouts understand the impact of litter on the environment and the importance of native flora.

Celebrate with Many Troops

In Houston, the San Jacinto girls organized a collaborative Earth Day event with 12 different troops, gathering 54 scouts and their families. Together, they planted a community garden, played outdoor games, and participated in crafting activities. The girls created a recycling pledge and decorated reusable bags, promoting sustainable practices in their daily lives. They left not only with knowledge but with commitments to protect the planet.

First-Year Daisy Troop Helping the Environment

The Daisy Troop 122 from Tucson, AZ, took part in a Picnic in the Park Program hosted by Saguaro National Park. They learned about Leave No Trace Principles, emphasizing the importance of minimizing human impact on nature. The event included guided hikes, access to park programs, and various craft activities. This initiative nurtures a love for nature and equips the younger scouts with valuable outdoor skills and knowledge.
