Observe Animals on Webcams

Keep Your Daisies Cozily Observing from Anywhere!

When you’re working on the Daisy Animal Observer Badge or the Junior Animal Habitats, getting outside to spot wildlife is fantastic—but nature doesn’t always cooperate. Whether it’s a rainy meeting day, a winter session, or you just want to see exotic wildlife that doesn’t live in your local park, using animal webcams is a brilliant, troop-tested workaround.

Observing live camera feeds allows your kindergarten and first-grade Girl Scouts to practice their observation skills without disturbing the animals (or trying to keep a troop of energetic 5-year-olds completely silent in the woods!).

3 Simple Steps to a Webcam Meeting:

  • Set up a “Watch Party”: Cast a live stream to a TV or pull it up on a tablet. Eagle cams, zoo penguin feeds, or sea otter exhibits are always massive hits with this age group.
  • Track the Findings: Give each girl a simple tally sheet or drawing pad. Have them look for specific behaviors: Is the animal eating? Grooming? Sleeping? Playing with a friend?
  • Discuss Like Scientists: Talk about what they saw. Ask them how the animal moves and what surprised them about its behavior.

Leader Tip: Live cams can sometimes mean animals are sleeping or off-screen. It’s always a good idea to have a backup pre-recorded clip of the same animal ready to go just in case!
