Do Daisy Girl Scouts have to earn all the petals?

Girl Scout Daisy Craft

4-minute read:

Honestly? No. If you’re feeling the crunch, take a deep breath. Your girls don’t need to earn all 10 petals to have an amazing first year.

The petals represent the 10 parts of the Girl Scout Law, but if you’re short on time, focusing on just 4 or 5 is totally fine. Most of us spread the full “flower” out over the entire two-year Daisy program anyway. It keeps things low-pressure for you and the girls while still getting those core values across.

Where’s the best place to grab official Daisy badges?

You can snag official badges through the Girl Scout Shop online or hit up your local council’s physical store. These are the official pins and patches made specifically for that iconic blue uniform.

Pro-tip: If you’re buying for a full troop of 12, ordering online is usually the fastest way to get everything in one go. And don’t forget to mix in some fun patches to keep things colorful!

We’ve included some patch suggestions to give to participants. See all our fun patches.

Tunic vs. Vest: Which one should I pick?

It mostly comes down to fit. The tunic is a pullover style that’s great for the tiny scouts (sizes 4 to 6). The vest is the classic button-front look.

About 70% of leaders actually recommend the vest. Why? It usually lasts longer as they grow, and it has way more “real estate” for all those patches and pins they’ll be racking up.

How many badges is “normal” for one year?

There’s no “badge police,” but most troops aim for 6 to 9 per year. That pace usually means earning a badge every 2 or 3 meetings. It’s the sweet spot for keeping 5 and 6-year-olds excited without making your planning calendar feel like a marathon. If you meet 18 times a year, you’ll have plenty of room for petals, badges and fun activities.

Can they earn patches for just… doing fun stuff?

Absolutely! That’s what fun patches
are for. Whether it’s a 90-minute movie trip or a visit to a pumpkin patch, these are the best way to remember the “extra” memories. Just remember: official badges go on the front, and these fun, customizable patches always go on the back.

What happens if a scout misses a meeting where a badge was earned?

Life happens! If a scout misses out, she can totally do the requirements at home with her parents. I usually send home a quick 1-page worksheet or a list of the 3 steps we did. It keeps everyone on the same track so no one feels left out during the next pinning ceremony.

Do Daisy badges move to the Brownie vest later?

Nope. Think of the Daisy uniform as a two-year time capsule. When they bridge to Brownies, they’ll get a brand new vest and start fresh with different badge shapes. The only things that usually make the move are the World Trefoil Pin and any high-level awards (Bronze, Silver, Gold).

How much do Daisy badges typically cost?

Official petals and badges are currently $3.50 each. For a troop of 12, you’re looking at about $42.00 every time the group earns a badge. Most leaders collect $30 to $50 in annual dues to cover this.
