Amazing Gold Award: Building a Percussion Park

The Gold Award is the highest recognition a Girl Scout can achieve, signifying a project that makes a positive difference in the community. Fifteen-year-old Paige Thomas, a dedicated Gold Award recipient, has made a significant impact on the Rotary Club Youth Camp in Lee’s Summit by raising nearly $20,000 to create a new percussion playground.
Inclusiveness was Paige’s Biggest Inspiration
With a vision for inclusiveness, Paige aimed to ensure that all campers could enjoy music. “This one makes noise like a raindrop pattern,” she explained, referring to one of the many instruments in the playground. Paige’s percussion playground, which opened in 2025, embodies her commitment to leaving a lasting legacy. “It’s a reminder that I’ve created something that will help others for many years,” she said.
Laurie Mozley, Camp Superintendent at the Rotary Club Youth Camp, expressed her appreciation for Paige’s hard work. “Many of our campers experience strong emotions,” Mozley said. “These musical instruments provide a wonderful outlet for them, helping to channel those feelings and find joy in creating sound.”
Over the summer, the camp welcomes around 1,200 campers and anticipates serving between 2,000 and 3,000 during the school year. Currently, the camp is hosting “Girls Can Camp,” an event tailored for girls with disabilities and their friends.
Paige is taking on the role of a counselor in training during this program. One of the campers, Rose Williams, expressed her gratitude with a heartfelt hug, saying, “I love the music Paige created with these because it makes a beautiful sound.” Paige earned her “Counselor in Training” badge During her journey and is currently working on the next level, further enriching her experience and the lives of her fellow campers.
