10 Activities for Daisies to Earn the Rose Petal: Make the world a Better Place

Earning the Rose Petal is one of the most rewarding parts of being a Daisy Girl Scout. While other petals focus on personal character, this one is about taking action and realizing that even the youngest scouts have the power to change their community.

To earn the Rose Petal, Daisies learn what it means to “Make the World a Better Place.” Use these 10 engaging activities to help your troop understand how their small hands can make a big difference.

Learn About Leave No Trace

Leave No Trace (LNT) is a set of seven science-based principles designed to minimize human impact on nature and encourage outdoor enthusiasts to protect the environment. It provides a framework for responsible recreation, aiming to leave natural areas in the same or better condition than they were found.

Decorate “Happy Bags”

Partner with a local food pantry. Have the girls decorate paper grocery bags with bright drawings, stickers, and encouraging messages like “You are special!” This adds a touch of joy to someone’s day. Grocery stores will often donate bags to troops for this reason.

Gently Used Toy/Book Drive

Ask each girl to bring in one toy or book they no longer play with but is still in good condition. Collect them as a troop and donate them to a local shelter or library, showing them that sharing resources helps everyone.

Make Seed Bombs

Whether it’s a plant pot, flowerbed, wild patch in your lawn or an entire meadow, sowing wildflowers in your garden provides vital resources to support a wide range of insects that couldn’t otherwise survive in urban or built-up areas. And the kids love to make them!

Take a litter walk

Take the girls on a short walk around your meeting site with gloves and trash bags. Seeing how much trash they can prevent from reaching the ocean or local parks gives them a tangible sense of accomplishment. Use the coloring page from Youth Squad to talk about the problems with plastic getting into the ocean.

Role-Play: “The Problem Solvers”

Give the girls simple scenarios. Ask them to act out how a Girl Scout would “Make the World a Better Place” in those moments.

Scenario A: You see a classmate who dropped their lunch.

Scenario B: You see someone crying on the playground.

Every Thing Matters

Share our download showing a variety of ways the girls can be generous and make the world a better place. Challenge your girls to choose one or more activities and make a pledge to do them for the rest of their lives.

Make a “Kindness Chain”

Give each girl strips of rose-colored paper. Ask them to think of ways they could make the world a better place. Have girls add a link each time someone thinks of something they can do.

Read Aloud: The Curious Garden by Peter Brown

Books are a great way to spark discussion. After reading, ask the girls: “If you were the main character, what is one thing you would do today to help the Earth?”
