Learn basic money smarts.

• Show girls how many quarters, dime, nickels and pennies make $1.
• Teach them how to make change and count back to customer for cookie purchases.
• Show them how to make a plan for troop funds:
• Use some for business (badges, patches, registration, uniform, troop supplies)
• Use some for fun (trip or party)
• Use some for service (supplies for project or purchase items to donate)

Suggestions for how Junior* and Cadette* Girls can earn the Money Wise Patch:
Learn simple budgeting.

• Teach the girls how to set aside troop funds for short and long term goals.
• Use some for immediate fun (trip, party or local event)
• Save some for a big trip. Plan to include expenses for required chaperones.
• Ask the girls to set goals for savings.

Suggestions for how Senior* and Ambassador* Girls can earn the Money Wise Patch:
Learn money life skills.

• Learn how to open a bank account and write a check.
• Learn how to keep a ledger for checking and savings accounts. It is important to keep accurate records to make sure you have enough in account to cover checks and debits.
• Learn the difference between a debit and credit card and how each works. Teach strategies for keeping PIN #’s safe.
• Discuss which things are worth going into debt for (college, home, car). Discuss alternatives to minimize debt.
• Discuss which things should be seriously considered before charging (clothing, entertainment).
• Teach them about loans: principal and interest.
• Learn how to minimize debt by making payments toward the principal balance to reduce the amount of a loan.
• Making minimum credit card payments will keep you in debt much longer and interest continues to be added.

Suggestions for How Daisy* and Brownie* Girls can earn the Healthy Habits Patch:
Establish good habits early.

• Show girls how to properly brush their teeth. Ask a dentist come to a meeting or go on a tour to a dentist office to teach your girls oral hygiene.
• Teach girls the importance of washing their hands before meals and after using the bathroom.
• Remind girls not to share combs, brushes, clips and hats. Keeping hair brushed helps girls look their best.

Suggestions for How Junior* and Cadette* Girls can earn the Healthy Habits Patch:
Taking it up a notch.

• By now girls know about brushing teeth but might want to learn about mouthwash.
• Try some experiments with hand washing to see if they are washing their hands properly.
• Ask girls to rub a little oil on their hands then sprinkle with cinnamon (to represent germs).
• Ask girls wash without soap and see how the ‘germs’ don’t come off.
• Ask girls wash with soap for 20 seconds (sing the Happy Birthday song twice) to see the importance of soap and the length of time needed to get rid of germs.
• Make your hygiene lesson fun by having them try different hairstyles. Remind them to use their own combs, brushes and hair accessories.
• Discuss the importance of regular shower and shampoo.

Suggestions for How Senior* and Ambassador* Girls can earn the Healthy Habits Patch:
Taking responsibility.

• The girls need to get ready to take care of their own health needs including being able to make appointments for physical and dental check ups.
• Encourage girls to talk to their parents about letting them make the call for their next health and dental check ups.
• Talk to the girls about deodorant and antiperspirant. Help them learn about the difference and which one is right for them.

Suggestions for how Scouts of all levels can earn the Save Water Patch:

Save Water:

• Turn off faucet while brushing teeth.
• Use re-usable water bottles whenever possible. It actually takes water to make water bottles. And the bottles themselves add to pollution.
• When you have left over drinking water, don’t pour it down the drain. Use it to water plants instead.
• Use less electricity. Power plants use a lot of water for cooling. Saving energy also saves water.
• If you see a leaky faucet or pipe, let an adult know. Repairing leaks saves water.
• Fill up the dishwasher before running it.
• If your washing machine does not have a load sensor which uses less water for smaller loads, doing full loads of laundry is also a water saver.
• Re-use pasta liquid. Encourage your family to drain pasta water into another pot. Once the water cools, it can be used to water plants.
• Think about other water that you can use to water plants instead of pouring it down the drain.

Share what you’ve learned about saving water.

• Spread the word about water conservation.
• Meet with younger troops and share what you’ve learned about saving water.
• Start a re-usable water bottle campaign.
• Providing rain barrels to local facilities that will use them wisely is a great service project.

Try this activity with your girls:

Divide the troop into 3 groups.

Group 1: Legislative: Works together to come up with troop rules and debate the details and decides consequences of breaking rules.

• Cell phone policy
• If troop pays for badges done independently
• Inclusiveness rules
• Respectful rules
• Dues policy
• Anything else they can think of to keep troop running smoothly

Group (or individual) 2: Executive: Approves, denies or doesn’t do anything with each rule suggested. (considered denied after x amount of time) (which 2 thirds vote of legislative can override).

Then leaders come up with scenarios where the rule might not be fair and takes their concerns to Group 3

Group 3: Judicial: Interprets whether the rules fit in with the Girl Scout Law.
