Cadette Troop #30222 from Grafton MA decided that they wanted to do a Silver Award project that would help turtles, bees and butterflies.
The girls in the troop became interested in endangered and threatened species began before they became Cadettes. They started with projects to help turtles by creating turtle crossing signs for their community.
When it came time to decide on a Silver Award project they focused on educating the community about the loss of habitats for turtles, honey bees and monarch butterflies. They worked for several years preparing for their Silver Award project. The girls participated in hands projects while learning how to protect these species.
The girls visited Mass Audubon Wachusett Wildlife Sanctuary where they learned about migration and helped tag butterflies. During a return trip to the sanctuary the troop harvested milkweed seeds.
One of the troop leaders, Mrs. Hogue, is an avid bee keeper. The troop had the opportunity to release 30,000 bees into hives.
The girls were then ready to teach the community that everyone can help create habitats to help these species thrive. The girls decided to host a fair where attendees could learn about turtles, honey bees and monarch butterflies. Everyone was invited to take home milkweed seeds and mason bee houses.

My name is Colleen Nash. Angela Hogue and I met when our daughters where entering 4th grade (almost 20 years ago). I lead the troop while Angela was a parent volunteer. The following year, we co-lead and have been going strong every since. Our daughters where starting their senior year in high school in 2010, and we were feeling very bittersweet about our Girl Scout careers ending. So we started a Daisy troop in September 2010! Here we are now, the troop is at the Cadette level and completing their Silver Award.
Every year we hold a complimentary Veteran’s Day Breakfast, a town-wide G.S. Halloween party, and many other events. We are a very active troop, to say the least!
