Suggestions for how girls can earn the Honoring All Veterans Patch:
To earn the Managing My Emotions patch, girls must complete a total of 5 activities from the list below, including at least one from each category: ( Understanding Emotions, Managing Emotions, and Expressing Emotions.
1. Understanding Emotions
- Read a book that explores emotions (e.g., “The Color Monster” by Anna Llenas or “Willow’s Words” by Jamie Lago) or see a movie about it ( Inside Out 2). Discuss the emotions of the characters and how they handled them.
- Emotion Wheel: Print on card stock the pdf attached to your order confirmation. If you don’t have card stock you can glue printed, cut out wheels to paper plates. Place the smaller wheel in the center of the bigger wheel. Poke a brass fastener through both wheels. Spread the prongs on the back. Choose one of the scenarios and discuss how you would feel. Decide which emotion fits best. Line up the scenario with the emotion. With your troop, discuss different things you could do to help you feel better.
2. Managing Emotions
- Breathing Techniques: Learn and practice different breathing techniques (like 4-7-8 breathing) to calm down when feeling overwhelmed.
- Emotion Journal: Start an emotion journal where you write or draw about your feelings each day. Reflect on what made you feel that way and how you managed it.
- Mindfulness Activity: Participate in a mindfulness activity, such as a nature walk or guided meditation, to help center your thoughts and feelings.
3. Expressing Emotions
- Art Expression: Create a piece of art (drawing, painting, or collage) that represents how you feel. Share your artwork with the group and explain your emotions.
- Role-Playing: In small groups, role-play different scenarios that might evoke strong emotions (like losing a game or a friend moving away). Discuss healthy ways to express those feelings.
- Gratitude Jar: Start a gratitude jar where you write down things you are thankful for. Share your notes with the group to promote positive emotions.
