Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson, an African American author, editor, publisher, and historian, established Negro History Week from February 7th – 13th in 1926. The focus around that week were the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass and he wanted to expand that focus to the contributions of the history and contributions of the entire race. By the late 1960’s many college campuses were celebrating black history and had expanded it. In 1970 Kent State University held the first Black History Month celebration. In 1976 President Gerald Ford signed a proclamation for the first national Black History Month recognition encouraging Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans”. Congress passed a law designating February as National Black History Month in 1986.

Pollinators Fun Patch

Bees, butterflies, birds and bats are among the many types of pollinators that move pollen from one flower to another which makes seed and fruits.
While visting a flower, the pollen usually sticks to the body of a pollinator which rubs off when it lands on a new flower.
Pollination helps create healthy ecosystems by enabling plant growth which provides oxygen, clean air and stabilize soil as well as providing habitat and food for animals and people.

Many botanical gardens, arboretums and audobon centers offer an opportunity for your troop to take a trip and learn about pollinators and how to help them thrive.

There are also many videos and printable resources to help troops learn about pollinators during a troop meeting.

Help your troop or service unit learn about the native flowering plants for your area.
Creating a pollinator friendly garden in your community is a great service project that also helps improve the planet.

Creating houses for birds, bats or bees makes a great service project for troops that prefer to work indoors.

Sybil Ludington: Learn about this Revolutionary War Heroine.
Mary Shelley: Ask girls why people thought it was her husband who wrote her famous book.
Maria Mitchell: Teen astronomer and advocate for women’s rights.
Maria Tallchief: Paved the way for future American and Native American ballerinas.
Barbara Johns: Advocated for equal educational opportunities for black school children.
Nancy Lopez: Broke barriers for women and Hispanic athletes in golf
Samantha Smith: Ambassador for Peace
Lynne Cox: A champion swimmer who advocated for Title IX to help ensure equal opportunities for women in sports
Nadia Comaneci: Her performance at the 1976 Montreal Olympics changed judging standards in women’s gymnastics. She is a lifelong supporter of the Special Olympics and continues to advocate for people with intellectual disabilities.

Activities:

Until the 1960’s and 1970’s women couldn’t have a bank account or buy property without a man to co-sign. Find out who introduced the bill to the Senate and which woman helped write the legislation.
Find out when and how did women gained the right to vote.
Find out who the first female judge was and when she was appointed.
Find out who became the first female doctor in 1849.
Today, there are still things that need to be improved for equality for girls and women. Can you think of anything?

Multi level troop 250 made tutus to wear (juniors – daisies) during our annual Believe Walk community service event to support breast cancer awareness

Troop 1147 Fort Worth, Texas making dinner for Ronald McDonald House. This was Cadettes through Ambassadors making Chicken Alfredo, Salad, Garlic bread and Better than Robert Redford dessert. Can’t wait to do it again it was very fulfilling.♡

Vote-Election Fun Patch

Many troops are at least partially girl - led so voting should not be a difficult concept for them to understand.

Hopefully they also understand that it's ok to disagree as long as they remain respectful and kind.

Younger girls can practice voting skills by hosting an election of their own to choose a troop crest, a troop party theme or snacks for their next meeting.

Older girls may want to volunteer to help get the message out to the adults in the community to vote.

It's important for the girls to remember they are only reminding people to vote, not telling them how to vote.
