Make a Bear Fun Patch

Kids love to sew! Your group can earn our Make a Bear fun patch by taking a trip to Build-a-Bear. They can also sew their new friend a vest and add your troop’s numbers.

Other ideas include purchasing premade kits or making your bears from scratch. Check out DIYtoDonate.com for easy bear sewing projects. Talk to your troop about making bears to donate also.

Kids can learn first aid using a plush bear they made themselves by having fun while practicing on their cuddly creation! After they finish sewing and fluffing up their bear, they can pretend it’s hurt and practice things like cleaning and bandaging little “injuries.” This way, they get to play doctor and learn how to help someone feel better while being silly with their stuffed buddy. It’s a cool way to learn important skills and feel more comfortable helping others if something happens in real life! Plus, having a cute plushie to practice on makes everything way more fun!

The Pinewood Derby is a staple Cub Scout racing event, running since 1953, where youth build and race their own miniature wooden cars. Using a provided kit (wood block, plastic wheels, metal axles), Scouts design, carve, and paint cars—often weighing up to 5 ounces—to compete for speed, craftsmanship, and creativity.

How to Make a Pinewood Derby Car Faster

Weight Management: Maximize weight to 5 ounces, placing it in the rear (approx. 1 inch in front of rear axles) to increase potential energy.
Reduce Friction: Polish axles and use graphite on wheels/axles.
Wheel Alignment: Ensure the car travels straight (or “rail-rides” against one side).
Aerodynamics: Shape the car to reduce drag.
Three-Wheel Motion: Some builders lift one front wheel to reduce friction

Daisies can earn: Automotive 1: Design, Automotive 2: Engineering, Automotive 3: Manufacturing
Brownies can earn: Automotive 1: Design, Automotive 2: Engineering, Automotive 3: Manufacturing
Juniors can earn: Automotive 1: Design, Automotive 2: Engineering, Automotive 3: Manufacturing
Cadettes can apply to their Woodworking badge.
Cub Scouts can earn specific Adventure Loops (for Tigers, Wolves, and Bears)
Webelos can earn Adventure Pins (for Webelos/Arrow of Light) by participating in the Pinewood Derby

Take a trip to a local sewing shop to help your girls learn basic stictches and how to use a sewing machine or ask a local seamstress to come to a troop meeting.

Host a service unit event for older girls to learn or perfect their sewing skills. Add a community service component to your event by having the girls sew stuffed animals, pillows or repair worn out clothing to donate.
