Scout Age Appropriate Movie?
Question: I am looking for ideas on earning the Global Action badge. I REALLY want to have a showing of He Named Me Malala, but it is rated PG13. I already have a space reserved. Do you have any other ideas of more kindergarten age appropriate movies on the same subject or just other ideas on the subject of Girls and education around the world in general?
Troop leaders from our Facebook page shared their ideas about when to give a certificate:
Carly suggested: Preview it first to queue it up but the first girl in the movie Girl Rising – from Haiti is exactly what you are looking for and it is appropriate for Daisies. There is curriculum online as well. She is a little girl who loves to learn and her teacher turns her away because she can’t afford her school fees. She refuses to be turned away and eventually is allowed to stay. It shows how schools are in the developing world.
Beverly said: Last summer camp for program age levels Daisy to Cadette, we earned the global award patch. With the Daisies, we discussed the importance of hand washing and clean drinking water. We used references from the United Nations for all the program age levels.
Tammy has a different opinion: I just watched part of the movie. I would say younger grades are way too young to understand what the movie is all about. I would save this one for Cadettes and above. Maybe older Juniors
Tammy suggested: Preview it and if you think it is “ok” than have your parents sign “sensitive issue” permission slip & make them aware of what you will be showing. It will be their choice to allow their child to view. We are doing the same thing with “Coat of Many Colors”.
Lisa offered a different option: There is a good documentary on Netflix called On the Way to School. It relates nicely to this year’s Global Action Award and is suitable for daisies.
Susan offered another option: Try this video. (I haven’t watched it all the way through, but it looks promising!) https://www.linktv.org/shows/viewchange/episodes/to-educate-a-girl
Celia suggests another resource: If you need other ideas, ask a librarian! They know everything.
Once you’ve decided on an appropriate movie, don’t forget the fun patch.
