GS Bridging Ceremonies<\/h2>\n

It is a very important part of a girls transition through scouts. They should be a fun and memorable moment for everyone. The girls celebrate their growth and achievements, and acknowledge they are ready for the new adventures and responsibilities that being a Junior offers.<\/p>\n

Make a Wish in the Fairy Well<\/strong><\/p>\n

Brownies form a circle around the wishing well.<\/p>\n

Leader:<\/strong>
\n“These\u00a0Brownies\u00a0wish to tell their wish to the
\nFairy in the wishing well.
\nTurn to the left,
\nTurn to the right,
\nMake a wish that is happy and bright
\nTurn to the east,
\nTurn to the west,
\nMake your wish for the one you love best
\nNow tiptoe up and whisper clear
\nThe wish you want the fairy to hear\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\"BridgingThe Brownies step up to the well, one by one; we give each girl a few pennies to throw into the well and make a wish to the fairy. The girls approach one at a time, then step aside while the rest of the girls do the same.<\/p>\n

Leader:\u00a0<\/strong>
\n“All listen closely, and I will tell
\nWhat she told to me-that fairy in the well!
\nThe fairies gave their crowns of gold,
\nThe woodland elves did as they were told,
\nAnd for each little girl in the room today
\nThey fashioned a pin in the Brownie way,
\nSo wear it and guard it, and always endeavor
\nThe words of the Girl Scout Promise to keep forever.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The Brownies say the Promise together, and the new girls step forward so the leaders can pin each one. The leader does the scout handshake and welcomes them into the troop. The Brownies not being pinned sit around the well while the pinning is going on.<\/p>\n

Baking A New Batch of Brownies<\/strong><\/p>\n

We did this at one of our bridging ceremonies, bridging our Daisys to Brownies.\u00a0 One of the leaders takes a large appliance box and turns it into an “oven” with a door big enough for the girls to crawl through. \u00a0The oven is placed close to a corner so the girls can all hide behind it. First and second year Brownies each take a part in the mixing a batch of brownies. We used mixing bowls, spoons, measuring cups, flour sifter and a timer with bell.\u00a0Make sure every girl gets a part (ideas: bowl holder, stirrer, ingredient adders, sifters, etc.)<\/p>\n

Leader:\u00a0<\/strong>(talks to Brownies)\u00a0We sure could use some new brownies to fill the empty spaces in our Brownie ring<\/em>
\nGirl 1:<\/strong>\u00a0Yes, what can we do about it?\u00a0<\/em>
\nGirl 2:<\/strong>\u00a0I know! Let\u2019s make some new brownies!\u00a0<\/em>
\nLeader:<\/strong>\u00a0Girls, look in your handbook for the recipe.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>
\nGirl 3:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Here it is!<\/em>\u00a0(Girl gives book to leader)
\nLeader:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0To make Brownies we must mix 6 basic ingredients:\u00a0 Promise, Law and the 4 program goals.
\nGirl holding bowl with spoon stirs as girls add ingredients.<\/em>
\nLeader:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0In a large bowl cream together\u2026<\/em>
\nGirl 4:<\/strong>\u00a01 cup of Promise to serve God, my country<\/em>(girl dumps cup into bowl)
\nGirl 5<\/strong>:\u00a0To this mixture, add two cups of honesty\u00a0<\/em>
\nGirl 6<\/strong>:\u00a0\u00a04 tablespoons of cheerfulness. Mix together until well blended.<\/em>
\nGirl 7:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Stir in one cup of thoughtfulness. Beat together \u00bd cup fairness and \u00bd cup helpfulness, and add to the mixture.<\/em>
\nGirl 8:\u00a0<\/strong>Sprinkle over the mixture 2 tablespoons of sisterhood of scouting, and mix well.<\/em>
\nGirl 9:\u00a0<\/strong>Add one cup of respect for authority, and one cup of respect for others and myself. Stir until well blended.<\/em>
\nGirl 10<\/strong>:\u00a0Sift together \u00bd cup of wise use of resources and 6 tablespoon of a promise to protect and improve the world. Stir into mixture.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>
\nGirl 11:<\/strong>\u00a0Blend together \u00bd c of each of the following goals: develop individual potential, relate to others, develop values, and contribute to society.<\/em>
\nGirl 12:<\/strong>\u00a0In a prepared pan. Spread the batter evenly.\u00a0<\/em>(Quickly put pan in oven)\u00a0Bake at a moderate temperature until done.<\/em>\u00a0(Ring bell)
\nLeader:<\/strong>\u00a0They\u2019re done!<\/em>\u00a0(Open door: girls start to crawl out of the oven).\u00a0Look! A new batch of brownies!\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

(The amount of girls we had for the ceremony is how we divided the parts.)<\/p>\n

Brownie Nest Fly-Up<\/strong><\/p>\n

Make a nest, placing a piece of plastic on ground and covering it with straw to look like a birds nest.\u00a0Previous to the ceremony, we had each girl\u00a0decorate a pair of wings made out of heavy paper. At the ceremony we pinned them on their back by attaching them onto their arms with loops of straps. The girls got to paint them in any color they wanted, painting both sides. (Idea: cover each wing with contact paper to make them stronger.)<\/p>\n

Brownie Fly Up\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is a skit to act out…<\/p>\n

Leader:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Long ago, Brownies were called Brown Owls, and moving from one level to the next was called flying up.\u00a0\u00a0This is a bridging skit. It is to demonstrate the move from Brownies to Juniors.<\/em><\/p>\n

All girls get into nest with wings (arms over head)<\/p>\n

Leader:\u00a0<\/strong>Once upon a time there was a nest with<\/em>(number of bridging brownies)\u00a0eggs. One day\u00a0the brownie\u00a0eggs hatched and out popped brown owlets, one by one\u00a0until all the eggs had hatched.<\/em>(girls stand up and wings to the side (have girls bring down wings slowly to look like hatching).<\/p>\n

Leader:<\/strong>\u00a0While the owlets were small, the mama owl taught them and fed them in the nest.\u00a0<\/em>(Troop leader pretends to\u00a0feed\u00a0the brownies GS cookies.)\u00a0\u00a0Then one day, it was time for the owlets to try out their baby wings.\u00a0\u00a0The mama owl pushed them out of the nest and the owlets took flight.\u00a0<\/em>(The brownies leave the box and pretend to fly by flapping their wings and walking around in circle.<\/p>\n

Leader:\u00a0<\/strong>Finally, when the mama owl was sure they were ready to make it on their own, she called to them.\u00a0<\/em>(All the brownies gather around the leader.)\u00a0\u00a0\u201cGirls, it is time for you to leave the nest and travel to another land.
\n<\/em>(If the leader is also moving up)\u00a0I will join you there, but you must make the trip by yourself.
\n<\/em>At this point the bridging leader(s) walks over the bridge and is welcome by the junior troop (if not a muti-level troop, invite a junior troop to take part, or just bridge leader to juniors prepared to welcome the brownies to juniors.)<\/p>\n

Leader:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Fly to the river and cross the bridge.\u00a0\u00a0On the other side will be the land of Juniors.\u00a0\u00a0When you get there, you will find me<\/em>\u00a0(or name of new leader)\u00a0waiting with other brown owls that have made the\u00a0journey\u00a0before you.\u00a0\u00a0You will make your new home there.\u00a0You\u00a0will then receive wings of gold.\u00a0\u00a0Keep them to remember your journey.\u201d\u00a0<\/em>
\n(Girls can do a little acting at this time, flying around)<\/p>\n

Leader:\u00a0<\/strong>So the\u00a0<\/em>(number of bridging brownies)\u00a0owls flew off looking for the river and bridge. When they came to it, they stopped and landed without crossing\u00a0<\/em>(Brownie side).\u00a0\u00a0On the other side of the bridge is the leader (if brownie leader moved up) and other Juniors, .One by one the leader calls the Brownies to cross the bridge and receive their new wings and pin from her (or new leader) and are greeted with the GS handshake from the junior girls.)<\/p>\n

\"Bridging<\/p>\n

In our troop, our Brownies have different grade levels. The Brownies that did not fly up stood by the bridge to wave goodbye to their fellow Brownies. When the bridging Brownies got to the center of the bridge, they turned toward them and waved goodbye. (Its always a very emotional moment)<\/p>\n

We also have the Juniors help take off the Brownie Vest and put on the new Junior Vest. Then the leader pins the girl and does the scout handshake. In our troop, we always give one carnation to every bridging girl. The carnation is presented to each girl by a Junior once she has crossed the bridge.<\/p>\n
