Have a lifeguard lead a group discussion about different authority figures,\u00a0water safety rules and why it&#8217;s important to follow them. Then play and swim for awhile putting respecting authority (lifeguards) into practice. \u00a0We did this at a small indoor water park in the middle of a cold midwest winter and the trip\u00a0was a huge hit.<\/li>\n<li>Brittany\u00a0shared: We made little charts and\u00a0cut outs of authority figures for the girls to place\u00a0under the correct heading. Mom goes under &#8220;home,&#8221; teacher under &#8220;school&#8221; and police officer under &#8220;community &#8220;, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Mary Beth responded: We used sidewalk chalk to draw\u00a0a town on the playground. Different places such as\u00a0the police station, fire station, church and library were included. We then had a discussion about\u00a0the\u00a0proper way to speak with each type of person we would encounter in the different buildings. The girls\u00a0then role played conversations they could have with those people while showing them respect. It was an easy way of accomplishing the petal without taking\u00a0a field trip.<\/li>\n<li>Courtney\u00a0shared what her troop did: A couple who are both veterans own and operate a restaurant in our town. The wife is the first female Marine to get her gold wings for jumping from planes. Prior to that, female\u00a0Marines weren&#8217;t permitted to jump. She spoke with\u00a0our girls about flag etiquette and respecting the flag. Our Daisies used the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/makingfriends.com\/product\/veterans-day-card-making-kit\/\">Veteran&#8217;s Day Card Making Kit<\/a><\/strong> from MakingFriends\u00ae .com which we embellished with star stickers and signed. We went to the restaurant on the weekend of Veteran&#8217;s Day. The girls handed out cards to every veteran at the restaurant that day and thanked them for their service. They earned three patches that day\u00a0including the Respect Authority petal, Flag etiquette, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/makingfriends.com\/product\/honoring-our-veterans-service-patch\/\">Honoring Our Veterans<\/a><\/strong>. You\u00a0can reach out to a local American Legion hall and see if they would allow your troop to visit. You can also ask if they will\u00a0put you in touch with a veteran willing to teach the girls about respecting the flag. A female veteran would be even better.<\/li>\n<li>Tabitha&#8217;s troop also reached out to the military:\u00a0We had a former female army member\u00a0come to our meeting. She also taught the girls how to respect the flag and fold it.<\/li>\n<li>Danielle\u00a0suggested: We took our troop to a dojo for a karate lesson and\u00a0incorporated the Respect Myself and Others petal\u00a0in addition to the Respect Authority petal.<\/li>\n<li>Ashley, Elizabeth and Jen all suggested visits from school officials: The principal, vice principal, librarian or\u00a0art teacher may be willing to visit\u00a0with scout troops.<\/li>\n<li>Tracy incorporated games from her childhood: We played Red Light, Green Light and Mother, May I? at our meeting.
