Our Daisy learned how nature needs water to live\u00a0while the Brownies are doing the journey WOW. The\u00a0Juniors are learning that as a team, their power to change things is greater. The\u00a0Cadettes are working on\u00a0their Breathe Journey. But we also wanted the girls to learn how fun water can be. During a first time troop camping trip,\u00a0we decided to show the girls how to have fun with water. They built their own water rockets and got to launch them.<\/p>\n<p>In order to use resources wisely, we had\u00a0the girls look for things on our nature hike that they thought they could use as a paint brush to paint their rockets. They found a lot of interesting things to use including\u00a0many different kinds of \u00a0leaves, moss, acorns, sticks and one scout even used\u00a0a few different size rocks.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;re troop may be\u00a0interested in doing this with your troop as part of a journey, badge or for fun, so we&#8217;re including the\u00a0directions for how\u00a0the water rockets are built and how to launch them below.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4279 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/makingfriends.com\/girl-scout-leader\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/troop-43921-rocket-2.jpg\" alt=\"troop-43921-rocket-2  water rockets\" width=\"173\" height=\"230\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Items needed for Rockets<\/u>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2-liter soda bottle<\/li>\n<li>Foam Board<\/li>\n<li>Packing tape<\/li>\n<li>Tennis Ball<\/li>\n<li>Nail<\/li>\n<li>Pencil<\/li>\n<li>Ruler<\/li>\n<li>Utility Knife<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Launching items needed<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bicycle Tire Pump<\/li>\n<li>Cork Stopper<\/li>\n<li>Measuring Cup<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4280 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/makingfriends.com\/girl-scout-leader\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/troop-43921-rocket-3.jpg\" alt=\"troop-43921-rocket-3  water rockets\" width=\"134\" height=\"240\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Water<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Your water rocket needs four wings.\u00a0Using the foam board, measure and cut out two rectangles that are 8 1\/2 inches by 13 inches. Cut each square diagonally to make\u00a0two triangles from each rectangle.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4281 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/makingfriends.com\/girl-scout-leader\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/troop-43921-rocket-4.jpg\" alt=\"troop-43921-rocket-4  water rockets\" width=\"175\" height=\"131\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Use your packing tape to tape each wing on the bottle making sure the opening of the bottle in facing down and not touching the ground. Your wings will hold the bottle up once all wings are on.<\/p>\n<p>Once your wings are taped on you will then place your tennis ball on top and tape it in place.<\/p>\n<p>For launching you will need to put a hole through your cork so the bicycle pump end will fit snug in the cork and air can go through (This will stay in place). Fill the bottle with 3\/4 cups of water and put the cork snug in the opening of the bottle before you\u00a0place the bottle on the ground. Pump air into it until it launches the rocket. I suggest that only adults launch the rockets as they come off releasing the water but most of all because they come down hard and can hurt a child. My troop loved making and launching their rockets, in fact they can\u2019t wait to do it again. My journey as a troop leader began because at the time my granddaughters wanted to join Scouts but there wasn\u2019t a troop in my area.
