Story submitted by Tara Marr

girl scout cookiesMany people see Girl Scout cookie season as time for Girl Scout troops to raise money to help pay for events, go on trips, and buy supplies for troop. We are a troop located in Akron, Ohio and my girls made the decision to donate part of their proceeds to help our wounded American Soldiers by sharing 10% of their cookie profit with Wounded Warrior Project; this is a organizations that means a lot to our Girl Scout troop because one of our girl’s dad was wounded in Iraq.

Girl Scout Troop 90057, a mixed age group of girls, came together before the cookie sale and decided what they wanted to do with their Girl Scout cookie profit. With a open hear t the girls decided without a doubt they wanted to help our military. Akron, Ohio is not a military community so many of the Girl Scout troop’s customers never even heard of the Wound Warrior Project. During booth sales all the girls handed out bracelets and car decals and educated their customers about the project. The girls so excited to see the decals around town and people talking about what they did.

What is Wounded Warrior Project?

girl scout cookiesWounded Warrior Project (WWP) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to honor and empower wounded warriors. WWP seeks to assist those men and women of our armed forces who have been severely injured during the conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other locations around the world. WWP serves to raise awareness and enlist the public’s aid for the needs of severely injured service men and women; help severely injured service members aid and assist each other; and provide unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs. Our Girl Scout troop helped out financially, but if your troop is interested in helping you can host an event to raise awareness of it in your community. You could also volunteer at a Tough Mudder, which is a 10-12 mile obstacle course challenge that supports by WWP. Our troop is hoping to get involved in one when it comes to our area.

My name is Tara Marr. I was a Girl Scout as a girl and now continuing my journey as an adult. I have been a Troop Leader for 3 years of a Brownie/Junior Troop and I’m also a Service Unit Director for 2 service units. Girl Scouts is my passion. I love seeing how the girls have changed from the beginning until now. It’s a great feeling to see the smiles on the girl’s faces when they earn an award or reach out to our community. We are a very active troop and try to help out our community as much as we can.
